As a St. Louis native, and the Vice President of Production at KETC public television, Patrick Murphy is most excited about the station’s premier program, Living St. Louis. This signature show was won a regional Emmy for Best Informational Show for 2004. Most recently Patrick has been working on a documentary about the St. Louis Arch.

Patrick’s job description encompasses all aspects of production. He is responsible for producing all of KETC’s shows including Donnybrook and Living St. Louis, documentaries and specials. KETC has been on the air for 50 years, and is one of the highest rated PBS stations in the country. Recently the station has been producing more shows in High Definition, as this technology continues to expand.

His path into broadcasting was almost by accident. Patrick says ,“ In 1976 I was a teaching assistant at the University of MO/ St. Louis, when I heard of an opening for an on-air person at radio station KWMU. At the interview I did a voice audition and was asked if I knew how to operate the equipment.  Obviously I didn’t know, but quickly realized I wouldn’t be hired if I said no!” Patrick was hired, of course, and that began his first on-air paying job in broadcast production. A quick study, he learned by watching others in the business, asking questions, and getting an education through experience.

He fell in love with radio broadcasting, and two years later Patrick became a newscaster at KSLQ. There he provided St. Louis with a friendly voice
on the morning show, a position he held until 1981. He has also done voice work for Channel 9 since 1981, and has acted in commercials.

In addition to his day job, Patrick teaches both undergraduate and graduate classes at Webster University. He feels “it is important that students learn video production  from someone who actually does work every day in a studio.” Patrick also emcees the St. Louis Speakers Series. His most memorable speaker was in 2003, when broadcaster Walter Cronkite came to St. Louis . “He was an extremely friendly, funny, normal guy. I was impressed with how humble he was for a national icon, and the great way he had with people.”

Patrick is also justifiably proud of his wife, Anne Murphy. She is active in the art community of St. Louis, and is a former Executive Director of the St. Louis Artists’ Guild.  An accomplished artist in her own right, she also operates as a consultant for many Downtown art galleries.

With his sense of humor and intellectual honesty, Patrick Murphy brings integrity to television broadcasting in St. Louis.
